Valentine’s Day is such a beautiful holiday. Chocolate melts and roses die, but quilts warm the heart for generations! I recently asked our Facebook fans to share quilts they made that expressed their love for someone. I am so excited to show you what they sent! Some of these made me tear up and others just took my breath away.

Heart’s Desire: Family from Sandy in Henderson, NV

It’s 14” square with 2” blocks in the border and 3” blocks in the body. It has photos of my family in each of the larger hearts.

It was a guild challenge. We had to use the red batik and do something that expressed our heart’s desire. I chose family as my inspiration and a block designed by Carol Doak to carry it out.

Favorite part of the process: Paper piecing is fun, and I *love* quilting feathers!

For Mom (aka: Always in my Heart) by:
Terry Switzer Chilko
Morgantown, WV

The process of making this quilt helped me as I was grieving for my Mother. I was a beginning free-motion machine quilter, so stitching feathers for the first time was exciting.

Doxie Love by Barbara Sindlinger from Visalia, CA

The machine quilting was designed in a class at Road 2 California several years ago with Joanie Zeier Poole. I used a stencil design for the center heart and another for the other hearts. I then used the Doxie design from the material to design the rest.

I liked the ideas she taught in the class on using stencils in new ways, to use parts of a stencil or how to use your own design element like I did with the dogs.

Pieced by Cheryl Keown, quilted by Joy Voltenburg, Sullivan, Illinois
Designed by Terri Staats, called “My Love” by Sweet Treasures

“I Love You More”– something I tell my grandkids all the time. So four years ago when I started quilting, I knew the first quilt I wanted to do was for the bed that my grandkids slept in when they came to visit “Nanny”. When walking into the local quilt shop and seeing the My Love wall-hanging on the wall, I knew that was the perfect quilt for “MY LOVES”. I made the wall-hanging larger so it would fit on a twin size bed. Tucking my grandkids under that heart quilt and telling them that I love them more, my heart is filled is so much love that only a Grandmother knows. I know this quilt will always be a reminder to them that I will always “Love Them More”.

This was my very first bed quilt, therefore everything was exciting and enjoyable especially deciding on the heart color combinations.

Thank you everyone for sharing! These are amazing and true treasures!

I joined the team right when they are growing and it is so fun to be a part of such a dynamic publication. Don’t forget to check out our L-A-B-O-R quilt contest! Lots of wonderful prizes!

The March issue is shaping up to be our biggest ever!
Look for details about how our Featured Quilter, Ferret, went from Rocket Scientist to Fabulous Quilter.Pamela Allen’s art quilting journey is explained.
(Just a note – before you ask, no, you haven’t missed it in your mailbox. The March issue will ship in mid-February!)

Thank you Vicki! I cannot wait to see this issue! I think I am looking forward the most to reading Jenny Bowker’s article about how to write on fabric. What about you?

Wow! Who knew we would be so busy that it is hard to find time to post? With only two if us in the booth, and me running off every day to film videos with Todd, we haven’t had time to take a breath! A special shout out to Diane Doran for covering the booth with Kit while I run off to film with Todd and the artists. It’s so good to see old friends, and make so many new ones. The visitors to the Vendor section are fantastic and the magazine is being well received. We are being introduced to a host of new subscribers and advertisers.

Kit and I have been putting in long days, and have yet to see the quilts! This morning we are taking time for us…and my camera. I promise to post quilt photos tonight. Especially the Best of Show quilt Harmony Within by our good friend Sue McCarty! We featured Sue in the November issue as the artist we ‘followed’ at thequiltingschool.com taping.

We have the first two videos ready for you to view…a quick interview with writer Angela Walters, and a mini lesson on wavy borders from Pam Clarke! Watch and learn.

We cannot wait to see more old friends and make lots of new ones before the show closes on Sunday.

The trailer is mostly loaded, the laundry and packing are nearly finished and the last-minute scramble is on. I am looking forward to getting on the road for one good reason – Dick is driving and I can SLEEP! That’s a rare commodity these days. Hope to see many of you over the next two weeks.

Quick note – if you left a comment on my earlier post and it’s now gone, rest assured that we did not purposely delete them. I am still learning this new site, and sort of had an ‘oops’ moment. I will be more careful in the future.

Welcome to our new website! It’s been a long process, but we are so happy we spent the time to do it right. Kudos to our webmaster and her designer – they did a fantastic job translating our “wants” to our actual “needs”. Please be sure to leave your feedback.

Dick and I are off to Houston next week…it’s International Quilt Market & Festival time! Sara will join us for Market and Kit comes in Sunday to stay through Festival. Dick heads home after he gets us all set up – how did he get out of staying and working??

This is the first year that MQU will have a booth – let me tell you about the preparations! Suffice to say, sleep is a thing of the past. Dick built us new counters, our printer has been madly producing new order forms and special design handouts, and I have been sewing table covers, wall-board covers and the like. Be sure to visit us in Booth #204 to see what special surprises we have worked up for you! Linda V Taylor graciously loaned us the quilt she created in the July issue (with her fantastic “Linda’s Fleathers” design) If you missed the article, we will have reprints in the booth.

If you cannot make it to Houston, never fear! I will be posting short videos from the booth and from around the show as often as I can. Todd Fletcher (he writes the Tech Talk column and is the producer of thequiltingschool.com) will be videoing some of the artists with their quilts, and some working at the machines! Look for our “Tip of the Day” spots.

Hope to see you either in Houston, or here on the blog! Vicki
