LABOR Quilt Contest

MQU CHALLENGE!
L–A–B–O–R

We at Machine Quilting Unlimited recognize that much of the world’s strength, freedom and prosperity can be attributed to the everyday worker –whether that worker is a farmer, factory employee, teacher, white-collar office participant, artist, household manager or professional.

To that end, we would like to celebrate such workers with a LABOR quilt challenge.
We have partnered with wonderful Sponsors to offer you an array of prizes!

1st Place Winner will receive a Gütterman Thread Cabinet containing Contains one each of 100 colors Art. 103C Natural Cotton Thread!

2nd Place Winner will receive a selection of FOUR battings from Fairfield!

3rd Place Winner will receive a fabric package from Island Batik, to include two fat quarter packs and two strip pieces sets.

Editor’s Choice Winners (two) will receive a one-year subscription, or extension of a current subscription, to Machine Quilting Unlimited Magazine.

Here is how you can participate:

Create an 8″ x 10″ quilt based on your interpretation of LABOR. The quilt size restrictions
include any binding and/or finishing. The quilt may be constructed of fabric, paper or any
other alternative material, but the quilt must be three layers – top, filling, back. Hand stitched
elements may be added, but the quilt must contain machine quilting. It must be finished on all
sides (bound or zigzag stitched on the edges) and must have a hanging sleeve on the back.

Embellishments and surface design elements are encouraged. However, any embellishments
must not protrude more than 1/2″ from the quilt surface. The finished quilt should weigh less
than 2 pounds.

Each submitted artwork must be original and free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the copyright holder, and you provide that written permission at the time of your submission. In general, you should stay away from commercial images and published text.

To enter, send two .jpeg images (less than 1 MB in size) of your entry (one of the finished quilt and one detail) via email by no later than May 1, 2012 to contests@mqumag.com, using the words “LABOR Quilts” in the subject line. Please include your name, email address, phone number, and a brief (less than 150 words) explanation of your piece. DO NOT “zip” your photo files and do not send PDFs. Do not send us your actual artwork unless notified that you are a finalist. MQU holds not responsibility for unsolicited artwork.

Finalists will be announced on May 22, 2012.

Winning quilts will be revealed in the September 2012 issue of MQU.

If accepted as a finalist, your quilt must be received in our offices no later than June 15, 2012, along with a shipping and handling fee of $10 (U.S.) or $20 (Canada and all other International) to cover the costs for the return of your entry. Note: This fee must be paid in U.S. dollars, via a check drawn on a US bank only, or via PayPal for Canada and International submissions. We will provide PayPal details if you are notified that you are a finalist. The entire piece and all of its packaging must weigh less than 5 lbs. and fit inside a standard shipping box (no larger than 12″ x 4″ x 14″) or padded envelope (9″ x 12″).

We reserve the right to keep and display the finalist “LABOR” pieces until December 2012. Quilts will be returned during the first two weeks of January 2013. If you have questions about this challenge, contact Vicki Anderson at vicki@meanderpublishing.com.

Note: By submitting your entry, you are authorizing Meander Publishing Inc to publish your project in upcoming publications and promotional materials, on our website, and in other e-media, as well as display it at trade and consumer shows while in our possession. Meander Publishing Inc will not be held responsible for loss or damage due to circumstances beyond our control.
